Dorsal rays XII, 15 (rarely 16); anal rays II, 13 (rarely 12); pectoral rays 20 (rarely 19); lateral-line scales 20 (rarely 19); gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12 or 13 (rarely 14); greatest body depth 1.8-2.1 in standard length.
Overall dark brown, head and breast lighter, often with violet color on gill cover; distinguished by pale yellowish lips and bright yellow caudal fin; juveniles somewhat similar, but yellow color of tail extends forward onto posteriormost part of body and rear of dorsal and anal fins, also there is a large ocellated black spot near the base of the soft dorsal junction.
Size: to 16 cm.
Habitat: abundant along rocky shores.
Depth: 1-30 m.
Galapagos Islands, Malpelo Island, and Isla del Coco, Isla de la Plata (Ecuador); vagrants on the coast of Costa Rica.
