Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 17-21; pectoral rays I,10; gill rakers on first arch 7-9 + 15-17; none on rear surface of first two arches; narrow skin flap connecting posterior nostril on each side of snout; plate at front of dorsal fin base large, square or saddle shaped; palate teeth conical, in two patches on each side, these coalesce with age, the smaller inner patches continuous with much larger triangular outer patches; pectoral spine with moderately strong, curved serrate on inner margin.
Brownish blue to bluish grey on back, greyish on sides, and white below.
Size: to 90 cm.
Inhabits brackish and fresh water.
Depth: 0-15 m.
Southern Mexico to northern Peru.
