Overview
Main identification features
  • brown + lower body orange
  • yellow bar under and behind mouth
  • cheek - thin dark lines
Dorsal rays III + 30-33; anal rays 27-30; pectoral rays 14- 15; anterior rays of second dorsal and anal fins only slightly longer than posterior rays, these fins more or less uniform in height; tail fin straight; cheek with well developed groves; group of large bony scales behind operculum.

Dark brown on upper half of body, light brown to yellowish orange on head and lower side of body; a thin oblique yellow bar from rear corner of mouth across lower part of head; cheek with narrow black stripes; juveniles with dark brown spots and broken lines on upper half of body.

Size: grows to 40 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-35 m.

Central Baja California to the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California, to Peru, and all the oceanic islands.

Common around rocky reefs and along continental coasts (Ref. 9276 ). Feeds on sea urchins, small crustaceans and mollusks, often blowing into sand to uncover prey or turn over urchins (Ref. 5227 ).
