Overview
Main identification features
  • 5-15 narrow, incomplete, faint bars
  • rear dorsal fin anal fin dark
  • c: dark, white tip
  • blind side: front nostril = long tube
Body elongate, pointed at tail end, highly compressed; eyes small, close together, on left side, with triangular clear cover over pupils; front nostril on blind side a long tube; snout rounded; mouth small, arched (strongly on blind side), at front or a little under snout; lower jaw on eye-side without fleshy crest; preopercle covered with skin; dorsal origin ~above upper eye, 102-112 dorsal rays; 85-93 anal rays; 12 tail rays; no pectoral; only left pelvic present, separate from anal; dorsal and anal fused to tail; scales rough, on both sides; no lateral line; 88-100 lateral scales; few scales on inner parts of dorsal and anal rays on blind side.

Top side pale to dark brown; body with 5-15 thin, diffuse, mainly incomplete, alternating bars; dorsal and anal become progressively darker to rear; tail dark, sometimes white tip; lining of gut cavity not dark.

Size: 17 cm.

Habitat: sand and mud bottoms.

Depth: 10-165 m.

Southern Baja to Peru.
