Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays VII to IX+I or II,21-23, spinous dorsal well separated from soft dorsal fin; anal rays II, 17-19, long base, spine small; pectoral rays 17-18; pored lateral-line scales 52-57; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 7-10, total 11-15; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; no pores or barbel on chin; a pair of large canines at tip of upper jaw; margin of preopercle weakly serrated; pectoral fins long, reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; caudal fin bluntly pointed to straight; soft dorsal fin and anal fins with well developed scaly sheath.

Color silver, bluish grey on upper back; tip of lower jaw and opercular lining black; pectoral axil dark; fins pale to yellowish.

Size: to 35 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters and lower parts of estuaries.

Depth: 4-50 m.

Southern Baja California, and the eastern Gulf of California to Peru.
