Elongate, fusiform, compressed, oval cross-section; head deep, long (~27% of standard length); ridge down front of snout; mouth strongly oblique, lower jaw very prominent; no barbels under chin; eye small; upper jaw with a pair of large canines at front then a short band of teeth, outer teeth larger; lower jaw teeth in 2 rows, inner larger at rear; dorsal X-XI, 18-20 rays, 2 parts a little separate; anal low, 2 small spines, 9 rays; pectorals slightly longer than pelvics; tail with angular point; all scales smooth, small, 60-65 on lateral line, these larger than adjacent rows and with small accessory scales; soft dorsal and anal fins scaly.
Blue-grey above, silvery with orange-yellow tint below; spiny dorsal clear; soft dorsal and anal grey, with orange tint; tail dark grey; pelvics pale grey; pectorals orange grey upper 1/3, grey with orange tint below; iris with orange tint; inside mouth orange-yellow; tip of lower jaw dark.
Size: 120 cm.
Habitat: coastal, marine.
Depth: 5-50 m.
Costa Rica to Colombia.
