Dorsal rays X, 12 or 13; anal rays III,8; pectoral rays 17; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch (excluding rudiments) 14; scale rows on upper back rising obliquely above lateral line; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch on front roof of mouth crescentic to triangular with a relatively short posterior extension.
Pale crimson or pinkish to yellowish with silvery sheen with narrow golden-green to brownish oblique stripes; a distinctive black spot or smudge on back below middle portion of dorsal fin.
Size: reported to reach 80 cm, common to 40 cm.
Habitat: occurs inshore in sandy bays, also in deeper trawling grounds.
Depth: 0-107 m.
Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, Cocos and Malpelo.

: 8. Preopercular notch and knob weak. Scale rows on back rising obliquely above the lateral line. Pale crimson on side, often with silvery sheen of horizontal rows of bluish spots; belly golden yellow. Head with bluish spots and irregular broken lines, especially across cheek. A large blackish blotch on the upper back below the posterior of the dorsal spines.
Adults are found over hard bottoms in inshore reef areas. Generally solitary or in small groups but may occasionally form big schools (Ref.
