FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features crisscross lines along scale rows dorsal fin and a: black margins pelvic less than pectoral Elongate, compressed; head compressed, top profile convex, length 22% of standard length; snout with blunt process, not overhanging mouth; eye ~24% of head length; no flaps under nostrils; 4-8 rakers on lower limb of first gill arch; dorsal and anal fins continuous with tail; pectorals long (1.7-2.1 in head), equal to or slightly longer than pelvics, 20-23 rays; dorsal 124-153 rays; anal 99-126 rays; scales often at right angles, small, non-overlapping, none on head or fins; lateral line high on body, incomplete. Plain brownish to olive above, paler below, with dark lines along scales producing crisscross pattern; dorsal and anal fin pale with blackish margins, other fins pale; inside mouth and gill chamber dark; no dark spot on chin. Size: reaches 28 cm. Habitat: benthic on sand and mud bottoms ; probably nocturnally active. Depth: 1-110 m. California to southern Baja California. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
