Dorsal rays VII + I, 10-11; anal rays I, 10-11; pectoral rays 19-20; pelvic disc present; mouth reaching beyond rear of eye; head rounded; eyes close together; pectoral long, pointed; scales relatively large and mainly rough; midlateral scales 32; head, nape and belly scaleless; tail fin longer than head, with long central point.
Generally whitish grading to brown on upper part of back and head; a pair of narrow brown stripes originating on upper pectoral base and extending to middle of side below origin of second dorsal fin, the upper stripe continuing farther posteriorly; middle of side with 4-5 brown blotches and black crescent-shaped spot at base of tail fin; upper margin of tail fin white.
Size: grows to at least 5 cm.
Inhabits flat sand bottoms.
Depth: 8-40 m.
SE Gulf of California to Panama.
