Elongate, cylindrical at front, compressed at rear; with a long narrow snout and a slender tail; jaws long and pointed, with top jaw overhanging; jaw teeth of varying sizes, exposed when mouth is closed; large eye; front nostril tubular, at front of snout, rear nostril a slit in front of center of eye; pectoral fins present; head and body <1/2 total length; dorsal fin origin in front of or behind gill opening; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail fin; lateral line complete on head and body.

Color: plain silvery with small dark spots

Lives on sand and mud bottoms.

Length: to 35cm

Gulf of California to northern Peru.
