Main identification features
  • only dorsal fin and tail fin black
  • dorsal and anal fins- 14 soft rays
Head about 24% of standard length; body very elongate; depth 12.5% of standard length; first dorsal fin VII, second I,14, two fins joined on the lower 1/4 of the second dorsal; anal fin I, 14: eyes minute; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail; dorsal, anal and tail fins with serially branched rays (each ray with small side branches); pectoral rays branching in a Y pattern; pelvics fused in a deeply cupped, nearly circular disc, the disc on a stalk, fin rays multiply branched; pectoral short, not reaching past pelvics; mouth large, nearly vertical, ends before center of eye; top jaw with 1 row of depressible, widely spaced, canine-like teeth, lower jaw 2 rows; gill opening from a little below top of pectoral base to a little above pelvic base, lower edge curved back; gill arches with papillae rather than rakers; no lateral line or head pores; scales small, smooth, non-overlapping, imbedded, cover body; head & pectoral base scaleless.

Color: Body translucent white, speckled with black along back, pink around gill area; dorsal fin and tail fin black.

Size: 8 cm.

Habitat: mud bottoms, estuaries.

Depth: 5-40 m.

El Salvador to Panama.

This species, which was originally described as a species of Amblyopus was included in Gobioides by Hoese 1995.
