Overview
Main identification features
  • nape scaleless
  • back ~6 dark saddles
  • side: row dark and yellow blotches;
  • upper jaw ~to end preopercle
  • pectoral: top ray with free tip
Moderately elongate, body compressed; head large (>25% of total length), broad, more depressed and pointed than in G. mirabilis; narrow bony ridge over eye, no median bony ridge between eyes; eyes small, far apart; sensory papillae on head few and separated (small, crowded and numerous in G. mirabilis); jaws very long - lower extends past eye 1/2 way to gill opening, upper extends to edge of preopercle in adults; preopercle covered with skin; teeth small, conical, in bands of 4-5 rows on each jaw; first dorsal fin low, rounded, 6 spines, 10-11 rays; anal fin short, 9-11 rays; pectoral broad, rounded, 20-23 rays, small top ray free from fin for ~1/4 of its length (completely joined to fin in G. mirabilis); tail rounded; membrane between pelvic fin spines with large side lobes; scales small, imbedded, rough in juveniles, smooth in adults; ~65 in lateral row, nape, scaleless (present on nape in G. mirabilis) or head, base of pectoral or throat; skin covered with thick mucous.

Sides light brown, with alternating dark brown and pale yellow blotches; ~6 irregular diffuse black saddles on back; belly yellowish.

Size: 6 cm.

Habitat: rocky tide pools with fine sand bottoms.

Depth: 0-2 m.

Northern Gulf of California.
