Body deep and strongly compressed; head depressed and broadly flattened above, its top profile ~straight; eye large (= snout); mouth partly below snout; top jaw not extendible; 15-19 short, compressed, lower gill rakers, the inner border of the lower half of the 1st raker is serrated; jaw teeth with double, asymmetrical points; hairlike teeth inside throat; dorsal fin V-VII + 11, origin of 1st dorsal before anus, much closer to angle of operculum than to base of tail; anal I, 22; pectoral fins long (1.25-1.5X head length); 4 rows of scales on cheeks; 46-57 lateral scales; 6-10 scales between dorsal fins.


Color: Pale, flank with a 1 scale wide silver stripe, bordered above by a dark line.

Found in coastal areas and lagoons and mangroves.
