Snout short (6% of standard length); dorsal rays II (rarely III), 24-28 (usually 26); anal rays 14-18 (usually 16); pectoral rays 15-17 (usually 15); total rakers on first gill arch 7-10 (usually 8); preopercle and opercle each with 2-3 spines; a slightly projecting lower jaw without fleshy knob at front; juvenile and adult with four, large oval pores along preopercular margin and four pores on each side of ventral surface of lower jaw (except in specimens less than 65 mm SL posteriormost pore may be divided into a few small pores).
Generally brown with numerous yellow-tan ocellated spots and blotches an body and fin; specimens under 2-3 cm are brown dorsally and yellowish white below with a pair of pale stripes behind eye, the lowermost extending to caudal fin base; the dorsal and anal fins of juveniles have prominent yellow bands basally and the dark tail fin is edged with yellow; larger juveniles and subadults usually have at least some of the pale blotches and spots with dark centers.
Size: to 35 cm.
Habitat: on reefs, also soft bottoms near beaches and estuaries.
Depth: 0-70 m.
Southern Baja to Gulf of California to Peru, Malpelo and the Galapagos.

Sides of body heavily marked with well-defined cream spots on dark background, extending onto head, cheeks and median fins; larger spots frequently ocellated; belly with articulated pattern, cream stripe on nape; dark band running laterally from lips to eye and continuing posteriorly to blend into background anterior to dorsal fin. Body and head, excluding lips and maxillary, with embedded scales. Dorsal spines 2 (rarely 3). Lower jaw not much projecting, lacking fleshy protuberance. Juvenile and adult with 4 large, distinct oval pores along preopercular margin and 4 pairs on ventral surface of lower jaw, except in > 6.5 cm SL specimens, most posterior pair may be divided into a few smaller pores (Ref.

Little is known about this shy and secretive species. It lies motionless, often on its side, hidden in dark recesses on rocky reefs and along walls during the day. Actively hunts at night, preying on small fish (Ref.
