Dorsal rays 11-14; anal rays 15-18; pectoral rays 11 or 12; 101-118 scales in front of dorsal fin; gill rakers 4 or 5 + 6 or 7; body very slender, rounded; gill spines present; tail fin base greatly flattened, forming keels, its width greater than the depth; tail forked; jaws very long, lower one longer.
Greenish to bluish on back, silvery on sides.
Size: grows to about 50 cm.
Habitat: coastal pelagic.
Depth: 0-5 m.
This species has a worldwide distribution in tropical and warm temperate seas, with the subspecies P. argalus pterura restricted to the eastern Pacific. Southern Baja and the lower 1/3 of the Gulf of Califronia to Ecuador and the offshore islands.
