Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993); Fishes of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea(Randall et al.,1990)
Character: Dorsal-fin rays IX, 26-28 ; anal-fin rays III, 25-26 ; pectoral-fin rays 17. Body brown; a round black spot at upper gill opening; dark blue line just below the bases of dorsal and anal fins. Dorsal fin with soft part with longer base than spinous part. Minute scales. A dark brown area surrounding latral spine on caudal peduncle. Large males develop highly convex foreheads that extend beyond the mouth. 
Habitat: Generally found at depths 10 - 50m on outer reef slopes and drop offs. Found singly or in pairs. Feeds on algal film on bare rocks. Juveniles found in shallow protected reefs, usually between soft coral, in 0.2-3 m depth. 
Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Mozambique and Maldives to the western Pacific. Taiwan: South, Hsiaoliuchiu, Lanyu, Lyudao, East.  
Utility: Commercial fishery and aquarium species.
