Andrena angustella is a moderate-sized bee from California and Oregon; very similar to Andrena (Archiandrena) banksi; female differs from banksi by small triangular labral process and distinct transverse labral sulcus, longer first flagellar segment, and more pointed pygidial plate; male differs from banksi by having clypeus only partly yellow, a long first flagellar segment, and tergum 7 with no recognizable pygidial plate.

female: MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS: N = 20; length, 10-12 mm; width, 3-4 mm; wing length, M=4.23±0.131 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.86 ± 0.006; FOVL/FOVW, M=2.27± 0.068.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or more dark rufescent; flagellum below dark reddish brown; tegula piceous; wing membranes slightly infumate, yellow, veins reddish brown to dark brown; tibial spurs testaceous; terga with apical areas slightly translucent, rufescent; sterna 2-5 with apical areas translucent, colorless at margins to yellow at bases.

STRUCTURE. — Scape length equals first three and one-half flagellar segments or more; flagellar segment 1 as long as segments 2 and 3 together or almost so; segment 2 about as long as 3, as long as broad; segments 4-9 slightly longer than broad. Eyes each about three and three-fourths times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Malar space moderate, minimum length equals one-fifth to one-sixth basal mandibular width. Mandible moderately long, when closed surpassing midlabrum by one-fourth its length, with subapical tooth, without basal inferior tooth. Galea pointed, outer apical margin concave, surface dulled by fine shagreening (often slightly shiny near base). Maxillary palpus exceeds galea by last two segments; segmental ratio about 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.8:0.5:0.6. Labial palpus with segmental ratio about 1.0:0.6:0.3:0.5. Labral process entire, small, triangular with free apex slightly thickened; labrum apical to process with distinct, transverse, shiny sulcus. Clypeus broad, gently rounded from side to side; surface dulled by coarse reticular shagreening, finer near apical margin; with small, obscure, scattered punctures separated by two to four or five puncture widths but more crowded and smaller laterally. Supraclypeal area tessellate, dull. Face above antennal fossae with fine longitudinal rugulae and small obscure interrugal punctures. Facial fovea shallow, broad, extending down to below a line at lower margins antennal fossae, separated from lateral ocellus by less than one ocellar diameter. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals about one ocellar diameter, surface tessellate, punctures sparse. Genal area broad, in profile broader than eye (almost 3:2); surface reticularly shagreened with spars! minute punctures.

Pronotum tessellate, with blunt humeral angles and dorsoventral ridges not crossed by oblique sutures. Mesocutum, scutellum, and metanotum opaque, tessellate, punctures obscure or not visible. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure evenly tessellate; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces tessellate, punctures obscure; lateral surfaces more finely tessellate, moderately shiny. Fore wing with vein 1st m-cu meeting second submarginal cell near middle or in outer third of cell.

Metasomal tergum 1 opaque, finely tessellate, punctures minute, sparse, obscure. Terga 2-5 similar but slightly shinier, basal area punctures slightly more abundant. Pygidial plate V-shaped with apex rounded; internal raised triangular area present. Sterna 2-5 with apical areas dulled by coarse reticular shagreening; basal areas moderately shiny, weakly shagreened, with abundant punctures near apical areas to almost impunctate at bases.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous, paler ventrally and laterally, darker on vertex and thoracic dorsum, except as follows: facial fovea with short dark brown hairs throughout or in upper halves; vertex and face near compound eyes with some long dark hairs; mesoscutum and scutellum with or without dark hairs mixed with pale medially; terga 2-4 or 3-4 with basal areas with short brown hairs in part or entirely; terga 5 and 6 brown to dark brown; basitibial plate and surrounding scopal hairs dark brown; outer surface middle tibiae, especially near apices, brown. Propodeal corbiculum complete anteriorly, interior with few plumose hairs or bare; trochanteral flocculus complete; tibial scopal hairs long, simple. Vestiture in general of moderate length; terga 1-4 with apical pale fasciae, often incomplete in median third or less of first tergum.

male: MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS: N = 20; length, 8-11 mm; width, 2.0-2.5 mm; wing length, M=3.68±0.247 mm; FL/FW, M=0.90±0.006; FS1/FS2, M=0.90± 0.058.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black with same exceptions as female except as follows: mandible with apical third or less rufescent; clypeus with apicomedian third to half (rarely less) pale yellow

STRUCTURE. — Antennae moderately long; scape length equals first two and one-half flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 almost as long as segment 2, longer than broad; segments 2-10 distinctly longer than broad. Eyes each about three and one" third times as long as broad, inner margins diverging toward vertex. Malar space and galea as in female. Maxillary palpus as in female, but segmental ratio about 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.9:0.6:0.6. Labial palpus as in female, but ratio about 1.0:0.6:0.4:0.6. Labral process strongly reflexed, bidentate, labrum apical to process flat, shiny. Clypeus flat (especially apicomedially, where shallowly concave in a few specimens); shiny apicomedially (in yellow area), reticularly shagreened basally and laterally; with distinct round punctures irregularly separated by one to three or more puncture widths. Supraclypeal area as in female. Face above antennal fossae as in female, but rugulae slightly coarser. Vertex as in female. Genal area in profile as much as twice as broad as eye, usually with a small posteriorly directed process posteromedially (as in banks!); sculptured as in female.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female; wing venation as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 sculptured as in female terga 1-4, but terga 2-5 often slightly shinier. Tergum 7 without a distinct pygidial plate. Sterna 2-5 as in female, but basal area punctures smaller, sparse. Sternum 6 flat, deeply emarginate. Terminalia as in figures 54-58. Note sternum 8 with broad apex with sinuate margin.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous to ochraceous, darker on thoracic dorsum; vertex and face alongside of compound eyes with long brown hairs; genal area near upper end usually with brown hairs mixed with pale; mesoscutum posteromedially and scutellum medially often with long dark hairs mixed with pale; terga 2-5 with narrow pale apical fasciae, occasionally tergum 2 with apical fascia narrowly interrupted medially; terga 2-4 with basal area often with short dark hairs mixed with pale; sterna with subapical fimbriae absent or poorly formed.
