This large western species is not closely related to any of the foregoing species but is similar to the European A. fulvida Schenck. Andrena astragali differs from other American Euandrena by its large size, the strongly bidentate labral process and the short, blunt galeae. In both sexes of astragali the tergal pale apical fascia is complete on tergum 1, as well as on terga 2-5, and the vestiture is usually dark ochraceous to brownish-yellow.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 10-13 mm; width, 3-4 mm; wing length, M = 4.44 ± 0.158 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.02 A 0.005; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.39 ± 0.064.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half rufescent; flagellum dark reddish-brown to red below; tegula hyaline, testaceous to yellow; wing membranes infumate, yellowish-brown, veins red; tarsi rufescent, often hind tibia bright orange; terga and sterna with apical areas hyaline, yellow; base of sterna rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape as long as first three and one-half flagellar segments or slightly longer; flagellar segment 1 distinctly longer than segments 2 plus 3, segment 2 slightly shorter than 3 and 3 shorter than 4, 4-9 quadrate. Eyes as in nigrihirta. Galea short, broad, apicolateral margin forms 45-50 degree angle at tip, surface moderately dulled by fine shagreening. Maxillary palpus normal but first segment shorter than usually, segmental ratio about as 0.8:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.6:0.8. Labial palpus as in nigrihirta but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5. Labral process large, rectangular in outline, with prominent apicolateral teeth, often slightly broader at level of teeth than just above base; labrum below process usually dulled by sparse minute punctures and short basal rugulae, no cristae. Clypeus relatively flat, surface dulled by minute crowded punctures and dense shagreening, usually gibbous just basad of margin. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and genal area as in nigrihirta. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals about one ocellar diameter. Facial fovea large, usually extends below to a line at lower margins antennal fossae or slightly below, separated from lateral ocellus by one ocellar diameter or slightly more.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in nigrihirta but propodeum outside of enclosure with punctures almost contiguous or finely rugatulopunctate. Wing venation, tibial spurs and tarsal claws as in nigrihirta; vannal lobe hind wing broad.

Metasomal terga usually opaque, densely tessellate, punctures sparse and obscure, apical areas slightly shinier, occasionally with bases of discs moderately shiny. Pygidial plate V-shaped, apex acute. Sterna moderately dull, sculptured as in nigrihirta.

VESTITURE. — Generally dark rusty yellow, occasionally duller with tergal bands pale ochraceous, rarely with head hairs mostly dark brown. Form and distribution of hairs much as in nigrihirta but generally longer and thicker and tergum 1 always with complete pale apical fascia of long hairs; terga 2-4 with pale apical fasciae complete. Pollen-collecting hairs as in nigrihirta.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-12 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.90 ± 0.187 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.02 ± 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.44 ± 0.034.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female except as follows: wing membranes slightly less infumate; sterna with apices hyaline, yellow; hind tibia usually orange, often mid tibial and apical part of fore tibia rufescent to bright orange.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae moderately long, reaching scutellum in repose; scape length equals first two and one-third flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 longer than segment 3 but shorter than 2 plus 3, segment 2 quadrate and shorter than 3, segments 3-8 about one and one-third times as long as broad. Eyes each about three and one-half times as long as broad or slightly shorter, converging slightly towards mandibles. Galea as in female. Maxillary and labial palpi as in female. Labrum as in female but process slightly smaller. Clypeus as in female but punctures more distinct, shagreening finer and usually moderately shiny, rarely slightly gibbous apicomedially. supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, genal area as in nigrihirta. Vertex as in nigrihirta but taller, above lateral ocellus equal to about one ocellar diameter.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in nigrihirta but propodeum outside ?•/ dorsal enclosure with punctures almost contiguous, rugatulopunctate. Wing venation, tarsal claws and tibial spurs as in nigrihirta. Metasomal terga sculptured as in female but shinier, discs shiny, finely reticularly shagreened especially in basal halves. Sterna moderately shiny to shiny, with small scattered punctures except at extreme bases and in narrow apical areas.

Terminalia as in Figures 65-69; note the following: gonostylus with inner I U{le; penis valves expanded medially; dorsal lobe gonocoxite short blunt, F often angulate apicomedially; sternum 7 shallowly emarginate; sternum 8 | expanded at tip, truncate.

VESTITURE. — Ochraceous to rusty yellow, much as in female. Distribution and form of hair as in nigrihirta but longer and thicker and clypeus with dense long beard; tergum 1 with distinct complete apical fascia of long hairs; terga 2-5 with complete fasciae of long hairs; sterna 2-5 with subapical fimbriae absent.

VARIATION. — Specimens from the eastern part of the range (Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah) tend to have ochraceous vestiture, rather than dark yellow. Two females from Santa Cruz, California, have the head hairs mostly black and the pleurae with black hairs mixed with the pale. Also, males from coastal California as far north as Marin County have considerable black hairs on the head (the face above the antennal fossae and alongside of the compound eyes). The paler eastern specimens would represent the nominate subspecies and the Californian specimen could be recognized as subspecies zygadeni, but there is no clear-cut zone of intergradation between these slightly different color forms. Pale specimens are known from California and the darker coastal specimens would then have to be recognized as a third subspecies. Our knowledge of the variation of this species outside of the relatively monotypic populations in southern California leads us to the conclusion that subspecies should not be recognized.
