This is a robust, coarsely sculptured species with black vestiture on the head, legs and abdomen occurring abundantly in montane areas of the West. It is similar to A. striatifrons in the short basal areas of the terga and the broad facial fovea of the female. The males do not have black vestiture as do the females, but can be recognized by the relatively long apical areas of terga 2 and 3, the complete lack of tergal hair bands, the short tergal hair, and the coarse sculpturing.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 11-14 mm; width, 4-5 mm; wing length, M = 4.31 ± 0.143 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.98 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.78 ± 0.054.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third rufescent and often at base as well; wing membranes moderately infumate, brown, veins dark brown to black; terga 2 and 3 and often 4 slightly rufescent in apical areas; distitarsi rufescent to black; tibial spurs dark brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first four flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 equal in length to segments 2 plus 3, segment 2 equal to 3 and shorter than segment 4. Eyes each about three times as long as broad, inner margins converging slightly towards mandibles. Malar space short, distinctly longer posteriorly than anteriorly (about as 3:1). Mandible and galea as in sigmundi. Maxillary palpus as in sigmundi but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.9:0.7:0.7:0.6:0.6. Labial palpus as in sigmundi but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.4:0.6. Labral process as in sigmundi; labrum below process crossed by several weak longitudinal cristae, surface dull. Clypeus with relatively small but deep, round punctures separated by half a puncture width or more; midline usually impunctate in apical half or two-thirds of clypeus; surface shiny, unshagreened. Supraclypeal area protruding, with small round punctures separated by half to one puncture width, surface shiny to moderately dulled by fine shagreening. Genal area distinctly broader than eye in profile; laterally with small punctures, surface shiny to moderately dulled by fine shagreening; ventrally with fine rugae strongly converging towards mandibles and fine shagreening dulling surface. Vertex as in sigmundi but punctures deeper. Face above antennal fossae with deep punctures but these not contiguous, interpunctural surfaces shiny, unshagreened or weakly so, with rugae weak or absent. Facial fovea deep set except posteriorly, separated from lateral ocellus by about three-fourths an ocellar diameter; lower portion rather short (about one-third of length of fovea) and relatively broad.

Pronotum as in sigmundi, Mesoscutum with deep, round, contiguous punctures separated by mere ridges (ridges sharp anteriorly and flattened posteromedially), surface dull, shagreened. Scutellum similar to mesoscutum but punctures larger and slightly sparser. Metascutal sculpturing as in mesoscutum. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure with six to eight strong longitudinal rugae on each side of central ruga and few cross-rugae, surface dulled by fine reticular shagreening, occasionally more reticulorugose and without transverse ruga posteriorly; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces dulled by moderately coarse, contiguous punctures with bottoms dulled by fine shagreening; lateral surfaces coarsely reticulorugose except anteriorly, surface dulled by coarse reticular shagreening. Mesepisterna with coarse contiguous punctures separated by sharp ridges, bottoms of punctures dulled by coarse reticular shagreening. Posterior hind tibial spurs straight or gently curved. Wing venation as in sigmundi.

Metasomal terga shiny, unshagreened or weakly so. Tergum 1 with apical area weakly demarked, twice as long medially as basal area or longer; basal area punctures deep, separated by one-half to one puncture width in strongly punctate specimens to one to two puncture widths, less punctate than apical area in same specimen. Tergum 2 with basal area about half as long as apical area or less, with crowded punctures separated by one-half to one puncture width or less and distinctly smaller and more crowded than in apical area; apical area with apical margin impunctate, otherwise with large deep punctures separated by one-half to two puncture widths (punctures smaller in more sparsely punctate specimens); occasionally apical area slightly less than twice as long as basal area. Terga 3 and 4 similar to 2 but basal areas longer and tergum 4 slightly shagreened. Pygidial plate V-shaped with well-rounded apex, internal raised triangle weak or absent. Sterna 2-5 with small dense punctures except in narrow apical area and at extreme base and with coarse reticular shagreening dulling surfaces.

VESTITURE. — Black or brown except as follows: dorsum of thorax with pale ochraceous to red, moderately short, dense, erect hairs; posterior pronotal lobes, dorsal area of mesepisterna (near posterior pronotal lobes) and tegulae with at least some pale hairs; inner surfaces tarsi rufescent.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8.5-12.0 mm; width, 1.5-3.0 mm; wing length, M = 3.52 ± 0.144 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.05 ± 0.006; FS1/FS2, M = 0.79 ± 0.020.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female except as follows: wing membranes less infumate, veins dark reddish-brown to black.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae as in sigmundi. Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins converging slightly toward mandibles. Malar space, mandible and galea as in female. Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.8. Labial palpus as in female but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.7. Labral process as in female but usually more distinctly emarginate; labrum apical to process without cristae, punctate. Clypeus as in female but punctures more crowded. Supraclypeal area, genal areas and vertex as in female. Face above antennal fossae coarsely punctatorugose, only sharp ridges separating the large deep punctures, surface dull.

Pronotum and thoracic sculpturing as in female except as follows: propodeal dorsal enclosure with rugae less regularly longitudinal; propodeal lateral surfaces weakly rugatulopunctate. Posterior hind tibial spurs and wing venation as in female.

Metasomal terga sculptured as in female but apical areas of terga 1-4 shorter, about as long as basal areas on each tergum or slightly shorter; apical areas of terga usually with a broader impunctate apical margin than in female and basal part more sparsely punctate. Sterna 2-5 with apical margin and extreme bases impunctate, otherwise with small, regularly spaced punctures separated largely by two puncture widths, surfaces shiny or moderately so, reticular shagreening sparse and coarse or absent. Sternum 6 with apical margin entire, unreflexed. Terminalia as in sigmundi; see figures 46-47.

VESTITURE. — Generally ochraceous to deep ochraceous; terga 2-5 without apical fasciae; sterna without fimbriae; vertex and face along inner margin compound eyes often with dark brown hairs; inner surfaces tarsi golden.
