This bee is abundant on vernal flowers of the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. Both sexes have almost complete apical bands on terga 2-4 and a weak apical pale band on tergum 1. The pronotum in both sexes has distinct, although rounded or blunted, humeral angles and dorsoventral ridges, and the propodeal enclosure is smooth, tessellate, without rugulae. The female labral process of monilicornis is entire and triangular; that of the male tends to be weakly emarginate apically. In addition, the first flagellar segment of the male is distinctly shorter than segments two and three together, and usually slightly shorter than segment three.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 10-12 mm; width, 3.0-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.06 ± 0.137 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.99 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.67 ± 0.034.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half dark rufescent; flagellar segments 3-10 dark reddish-brown below; wing membranes hyaline, veins red to dark brown; tibial spurs pale, yellow; distitarsi dark reddish-brown; tergal apices narrowly hyaline; sternal apical areas hyaline.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae as in barbilabris. Eyes each almost four times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Mandibles, malar space and galea as in barbilabris. Maxillary palpus as in barbilabris but segmental ratio about as 0.8:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in barbilabris but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.4:0.4:0.3. Labral process entire, triangular with blunt tip, surface with many fine transverse rugulae; labrum below process dull, punctate, without cristae, densely hairy. Clypeus with longitudinal median impunctate line, usually narrow, irregular posteriorly and broad anteriorly, not at all raised above surface; punctures separated by half to one puncture width or slightly more; surface shiny, unshagreened except near posterior border or weakly shagreened. Supraclypeal area dulled by dense fine punctures. Face above antennal fossae with dense small punctures and longitudinal rugulae dulling surface. Facial fovea long, broad, separated from lateral ocellus by about three-fourths an ocellar diameter. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals one ocellar diameter or slightly less; surface opaque, tessellate with scattered obscure punctures. Genal area in profile broader than eye; surface shiny in half near eye, dulled by shagreening posteriorly.

Pronotum laterally with blunt humeral angle and low, dorsoventral ridge; surface opaque, tessellate. Mesoscutum with distinct round punctures separated by half to one puncture width, sparser posteromedially; surface shiny to moderately shiny especially posteromedially; shagreened anteriorly and peripherally. Scutellum similar, usually shiny. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure opaque, smooth, tessellate; outside of enclosure opaque, tessellate with obscure punctures but not roughening surface. Mesepisternum as in barbilabris.

Metasomal terga 1-4 moderately shiny to dull, with small round punctures separated mostly by two to four puncture widths, surfaces reticularly shagreened (terga 1 and 4 usually shinier than 2 and 3). Pygidial plate V-shaped, without internal raised triangular area, dull. Sterna 2-5 as in barbilabris but basal area punctures less crowded (usually two to three puncture widths apart) and .surfaces moderately shiny.

VESTITURE. — Generally white to pale grayish-yellow, especially on vertex and thoracic dorsum, except as follows: hind tibial plates brown; terga 5 and 6 with brown to dark chocolate brown hairs. Clypeal hairs not erect, not hiding surface. Pollen-collecting hairs as in barbilabris. Terga 1-4 with apical pale pubescent fasciae but that of tergum 1 often weak and that of tergum 2 usually narrowly interrupted medially.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, S-11 mm; width, 2.0-2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.65 ± 0.12S mm; FL/FW, M = 1.03 ± 0.004, FS1/FS2, M = 1.08 ± 0.16.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female except as follows: flagellar segments 3-11 reddish-brown to dark brown below; terga 1-5 with apical areas narrowly hyaline apically and rufescent basally.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae long, reaching midscutellum or more in repose; scape length equals first one and one-third flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segment 2, shorter than 3; segments all longer than broad. Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins converging towards mandibles. Mandible, malar space and galea as in barbilabris. Maxillary palpus as in female. Labial palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.4:0.6. Labral process as in barbilabris but almost always gently emarginate, shiny. Clypeus flat, with small round punctures usually separated by half a puncture width or less, without median impunctate line, surface shiny, shagreened only peripherally. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and vertex as in female. Genal area broad, in profile equals one and one-half to two times eye width; with rounded posterior process opposite middle of eye; surface with small round punctures separated mostly by one puncture width or less, dulled by reticular shagreening especially posteriorly.

Pronotum laterally with distinct blunt humeral angle and blunted dorsoventral ridge; upper part of space between ridge and posterior border of pronotum with minute rugulae, otherwise dulled by fine tessellation and obscure punctures. Mesoscutum, scutellum, mesepisternum and propodeum sculptured as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 or 6 sculptured as in female terga 2 and 3. Tergum 7 without pygidium-like area. Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in female but punctures slightly sparser. Sternum 6 flat, emarginate apically. Terminalia (Fig. 16-20) much as in barbilabris but penis valves more acute, dorsal lobe of gonocoxite slightly blunter and sternum 7 much longer and narrower apically.

VESTITURE. — Generally white but thoracic dorsum occasionally slightly grayish. Clypeal hairs dense, hiding surface, long. Terga 1-5 with narrow, more or less complete, pale apical fasciae, weak on tergum 1. Sterna 2-5 with distinct white subapical fimbriae.
