This small species from southern California (Fig. 6) was first recognized by P. H. Timberlake. It is very similar to w-scripta from which it can be distinguished chiefly by the bright red or orange tarsi and hind tibiae. In this respect ferrugineipes is similar to the typical medionitens. Like w-scripta and unlike medionitens it has a slightly flattened, short clypeus with small punctures and usually lacks the impunctate median line of the clypeus. Both sexes of ferrugineipes resemble w-scripta and differ from knuthiana in the pale vestiture and resemble lauta in the wing venation.

If this morphological type were sporadically and widely distributed in low numbers, one might suspect it as being a hybrid between two of the above species (lauta and medionitens or w-scripta and medionitens). In view of the sparseness of material for study, it is deemed best to recognize these specimens as representing a new species and thus calling attention to the form.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 7; length, about 8 mm width, about 2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.09 ± 0.120 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93 ± 0.006; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.16 ± 0.075.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or more rufescent (entirely so in holotype); flagellum brown to reddish-brown below; tegula translucent brown; wing veins and pterostigma red, membranes moderately infumate, yellow; terga with apical areas moderately translucent, often rufescent (as in holotype); tarsi red to yellow (fore basitarsus often dark); hind tibia red apically (as in holotype) to entirely red or orange; middle tibia often red; tibial spurs testaceous.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape and flagellar segments as in w-scripta. Eyes each about four times as long as broad, inner margins converging slightly towards mandibles. Malar space, mandibles and galea as in medionitens. Maxillary palpus as in medionitens but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.8:0.8:0.8:0.7:0.8. Labial palpus as in medionitens but ratio about as 1.0:0.8:0.7:0.7. Labrum as in candida. Clypeus as in w-scripta, shagreened in posterior half to one-third, impunctate midline extremely narrow, irregular or absent. Supraclypeal area punctures obscured by fine dense shagreening. Genal area, fovea, face above antennal fossae, and vertex as in w-scripta.

Pronotum as in w-scripta. Mesoscutum as in candida but shagreening coarse, moderately shiny only posteromedially or dull throughout. Scutellum similar but shiny medially. Propodeum and mesepisterna as in candida. Wing venation much as in medionitens but vein r only three or four vein widths in length (as in lauta).

Metasomal terga, sterna and pygidial plate as in w-scripta or candida. Tergal fine sculpturing consisting of fine, transversely reticulate shagreening.

VESTITURE. — As in w-scripta and candida but usually pale vestiture ochraceous to yellow, on thoracic dorsum usually orange (holotype) to dark ochraceous. Terga 3 and 4 with apical pale fasciae interrupted medially by one-fourth to one-third width of tergum. Hairs of thoracic dorsum of moderate length. Pollen-collecting hairs normal for subgenus.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 7; length, about 7 mm width, about 1.5 mm; wing length, M = 2.71 ± 0.246 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.96 ± 0.008; FS1/FS2, M = 1.11 ± 0.032.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female except as follows: mandible with apical third to half rufescent; fore and middle basitarsi dark brown; hind tibia entirely brown to red or orange in apical third or less (allotype).

STRUCTURE. — Antennae short, in repose reaching metascutum; scape length equals first two flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 slightly longer than 2, shorter than 3, segments longer than broad. Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins converging towards mandibles. Malar space, mandible and galea as in candida, Maxillary palpus as in medionitens but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.8:0.7. Labial palpus as in medionitens but ratio about as in female. Labral process as in candida. Clypeus as in female but punctures smaller and impunctate midline absent. Supraclypeal area, face, vertex and genal area as in female.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female. Wing venation as in female one male with only two submarginal cells in left wing.

Metasomal terga sculptured as in female but slightly shinier. Sterna as in female but punctures sparser. Sternum 6 flat, emarginate apically. Terminalia as in Figures 47-51.

VESTITURE. — Generally as in candida but pale vestiture pale ochraceous to ochraceous; head and thorax without dark brown hairs; terga 3 and 4 with apical fasciae weak, broadly interrupted medially (by more than one-third width of tergum); tergum 5 with apical pale fascia absent (allotype) or extremely weak and interrupted; terga 6 and 7 with hairs pale; sternum 6 without apical dense brush or fringe.
