This species is related to A. scurra and A. cruciferarum. The latter species has a different range and is restricted to the southern half of California. Andrena gordoni can be distinguished from female scurra by the wider facial fovea, smoother propodeum and the spreading tibial scopal hairs. The male has some dark hairs on the face like A. lomatii and A. santaclarae but the propodeum is more coarsely shagreened than in santaclarae, the antennae are shorter and the genitalia are different (Figs. 39-43). Males of lomatii have shorter antennae than gordoni, better developed apical abdominal bands and different genitalia.

FEMALE. — MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — Length, 9.0 mm; width, 2.5 mm; wing length, 6.9 mm; FL/FW, 0.96; FOVL/FOVW, 2.86.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in scurra except body with weak metallic luster; hind legs entirely dark.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape slightly longer than first four flagellar segments; flagellar segment 2 shorter than 3; antenna otherwise as in scurra. Eyes each about 3.6 times as long as broad, inner margins as in scurra. Mandible as in scurra. Stipes with mostly hooked hairs. Galea short, broad, shiny with weak shagreening. Labial palpus as in scurra but ratio about 1.0:0.5:0.5:0.5. Maxillary palpus surpassing galea by less than last two segments, segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.5:0.5:0.5. Labral process broad, narrow, apex emarginate producing two large rounded lobes, elevated; labrum below process as in scurra. Supraclypeal area as in scurra. Face above antennal fossae, vertex and genal area as in scurra but with rather coarse shagreening, moderately dull. Facial fovea broad, separated from lateral ocellus by one ocellar diameter, length as in scurra.

Pronotum as in scurra but fewer punctures obscured by reticular shagreening. Mesoscutum dull, entire surface with punctures obscured by rather coarse reticular shagreening. Scutellum sculptured as mesoscutum but shinier. Propodeum with dorsal area triangular with coarse but regular shagreening; remainder of propodeum as in scurra but shagreening on dorsolateral and posterior surfaces smoother and regular. Mesepisternum as in scurra but shagreening coarser. Wings as in scurra but vein 1st m-cu meets second submarginal cell near the middle of the cell; second submarginal cell distinctly narrowed anteriorly. Legs as in scurra.

Metasomal terga 1-4 as in scurra but punctures indistinct, scattered. Tergum 5 with medium-sized punctures, reticular shagreening. Sterna 2-5 as in scurra but punctures further apart.

VESTITURE. — Generally white otherwise as in scurra except as follows: hairs at base of hind tibia dark, hairs at apex of hind femur and tip of abdomen amber; hind tibia with hairs along anterior margin mostly curved anteriorly, surface of tibia easily visible.

MALE. — MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — Length, 7.5 mm; width, 1.9 mm; wing length, 5.8 mm; FL/FW, 0.94; FS1/FS2, 1.75.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black to dark brown with same exceptions as in scurra but body with weak metallic luster, legs entirely dark.

STRUCTURE. — Antenna with scape slightly longer than first three flagellar segments; antenna otherwise as in scurra. Eyes each about three and one-third times as long as broad, inner margins as in scurra. Mandible as in scurra. Stipes with few long straight hairs. Galea as in female. Labial palpus as in female but ratio about 1.0:0.7:0.3:0.8. Maxillary palpus as in female but ratio about 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.5:0.8. Labral process broad, narrow, apical margin straight, elevated; labrum below process as in scurra. Clypeus as in scurra but entire surface with weak shagreening. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and genal area as in female. Vertex as in female but about as high as one and one-half ocellar diameters.

Pronotum and mesoscutum as in female. Scutellum sculptured as mesoscutum. Propodeum as in female but shagreening slightly coarser, triangular area with few basal rugulae. Mesepisternum as in female. Wings as in female but vein 1st m-cu meets second submarginal cell before middle of cell. Legs as in scurra but hind tibia rather slender.

Metasomal terga 1-4 as in female but apicolateral elevations weak, shagreening weaker, very shiny. Pygidial plate absent. Sterna 2-5 as in female but punctures scattered, very shiny. Sternum 6 as in scurra.

Terminalia as in figures 39-43; note the following: gonocoxite with dorsal lobes moderate in length, broadly rounded, apex narrow and slightly emarginate on inner margin; penis valve moderate in width, dorsal lamellae absent, apex long, thick, broadly rounded in ventral view; sternum 7 with large apical notch; sternum 8 with apex broader than neck region, apex with small emargination.

VESTITURE. — Generally white otherwise as in scurra except less abundant; face and gena with some dark hairs; apical abdominal fasciae reduced to few scattered hairs laterally on terga 2 and 3, fascia weak but complete on tergum 4.
