Andrena hypoleuca Cockerell is a small California species, the female of which has wide hind tibiae with largely simple scopal hairs, moderately shiny galeae, and the male has the first tergum moderately shiny to shiny with distinct punctures. In addition, the tergal apical areas and the hind basitarsi of the females tend to be red (dark in the holotype and only a few other specimens). The male of hypoleuca is readily recognized by the first tergum being moderately shiny with distinct punctures, the galeae moderately shiny, and the first flagellar segment being shorter than the second segment.

The female of hypoleuca is intermediate between females of angustitarsata and pallidifovea in the plumosity of the .scopal hairs. The female of angustitarsata has scopal hairs which are exceedingly short and almost entirely simple, whereas (hose of pallidifovea and relatives are longer and plumose throughout. The scopal hairs of hypoleuca are short, plumose along the posterior margin and weakly plumose along the anterior margin, but simple interiorly.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-9 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.67 ± 0.142 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.92 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.52 ± 0.048.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third or more rufescent, occasionally superior margin rufescent to base; wing membranes hyaline, slightly yellowed, veins dark red to reddish brown, pterostigma usually red; metasomal tergal apical areas usually translucent reddish brown; tarsi usually dark red, occasionally dark brown; tibial spurs testaceous.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape as long as first three and one-half flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segments 2 and 3 together, segment 2 distinctly shorter than 3, broader than long, 3 longer than broad. Eyes, malar space, mandible as in nasonii. Galea with outer margin concave; surface shiny to moderately shiny, shagreening absent or extremely weak. Maxillary palpus as in nasonii but segmental ratio about as 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.7:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in nasonii but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.5:0.4:0.6. Labral process trapezoidal to rounded apically, slightly thickened apically, almost as long as basal width; labrum apical to process without cristae, surface dull. Clypeus rounded; punctures absent in median fourth or less, small and indistinct posteriorly, becoming larger and deeper apicolaterally; surface dulled by coarse shagreening. Supraclypeal area dull, tessellate. Face above antennal fossae and facial foveae as in nasonii but fovea separated from lateral ocellus by about three-fourths and ocellar diameter. Vertex and genal area as in nasonii.

Pronotum, mesoscutum, scutellum and metanotum as in nasonii but scutellum often moderately shiny, shagreening weak. Propodeum as in nasonii but dorsal enclosure with fine rugulae mostly parallel but not reaching apex, which is smooth and tessellate. Wings as in nasonii but vein r longer usually equal to 4 or more vein widths.

Metasomal tergum 1 with basal area with small round distinct punctures separated by half to one puncture width, surface shiny to moderately shiny, shagreening absent or weak; apical area moderately dulled by fine shagreening. Terga 2-4 similar but punctures progressively less distinct and shallower and surfaces duller, shagreened, especially on terga 3 and 4. Pygidial plate V-shaped with apex relatively sharp, unless worn; surface dull, finely shagreened, raised internal triangle usually weakly developed. Sterna 2-5 as in nasonii.

VESTITURE. — White to pale ochraceous but dorsum of thorax often ochraceous to ferruginous, facial foveae with tomentum brown or partly brown, terga 5 and 6 with brown hairs. Pollen collecting hairs as in nasonii but scopal hairs plumose along posterior margin and weakly so along anterior margin. Tergal fasciae as in nasonii.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 6-8 mm; width, 1.5-2.0 mm; wing length, M = 3.11 ± 0.194 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.98 ± 0.006; FS1/FS2, M = 0.78 ± 0.011.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female except as follows: terga with apical areas usually translucent, yellow to reddish-brown; tarsi often red, occasionally brown; flagellar segments dark brown below.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape as long as first two flagellar segments or slightly longer; flagellar segment 1 distinctly shorter than segment 2, segments 2-11 longer than broad. Malar space, galeae, and mandibles as in female. Maxillary palpus as in female with segmental ratio about as 0.7:0.9:0.7:1.0:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in female with ratio about as 1.0:0.5:0.7:0.7. Labral process as in female but often weakly emarginate apically, usually shiny; labrum without cristae. Clypeus, supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, vertex as in female. Genal area about as broad as eye in profile, sculptured as in nasonii.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female but mesoscutal punctures slightly sparser, often scarcely visible; propodeal dorsal enclosure with rugulae finer. Metasomal sculpture as in female. Terminalia as in Figures 32-36.

VESTITURE. — White to pale ochraceous except dorsum of thorax usually ochraceous; terga 2-5 with weak apical fasciae broadly interrupted medially. Sterna 2-5 without subapical fimbriae.
