This beautiful bee of the Southwest is recognized in the female sex by its striking coloration. The female head, thorax and legs are dull black and the abdomen, except the last two segments, a brilliant, shiny orange-red. The thoracic hairs of the female are mostly short and erect and form a velvety dorsal surface. The male is less distinctive, being uniformly black with white or cinereous hairs. The male can be distinguished from the other species of Rhaphandrena by the relatively flat sixth sternum and the relatively long apical areas of sterna 2 to 5.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 9-11 mm; width, 3-4 mm; wing length, M = 3.87 ± 0.142 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.98 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.18 ± 0.051.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandibles with at least apical halves dark rufescent and often more; flagellar segments 2-10 dark brownish-black below; wing membranes moderately infumate especially apically. veins dark reddish-brown to dark brown; metasomal terga 1-4 and often base of 5 bright orange-red, corresponding sterna red, last one or two sterna dark reddish-brown; distitarsi and tibial spurs rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equal to first three and one-third flagellar segments: flagellar segment 1 as long as segments 2 plus 3 or slightly longer, segment 2 equal in length to 3 and shorter than 4, segments 2 and 3 broader than long, 4-9 quadrate. Eyes each about three and two-thirds as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Malar space extremely short, linear. Mandible moderately long, in repose extending one-third its length beyond middle of labrum. with small inner subapical tooth. Galea broad, dulled by fine tessellation. Maxillary palpus normal, segmental ratio about 0.8: 1.0: 0.7: 0.7: 0.6: 0.6. Labial palpus with ratio about 1.0: 0.5: 0.4: 0.5. Labral process short, at least four times as broad at base as long. strongly bidentate apically; labrum apical to process punctate. without cristae or transverse sulcus. Clypeus rounded, with small round punctures separated mostly by half a puncture width, narrow median impunctate line present, surface shiny, dulled by shagreening only posteriorly. Supraclypeal area with minute crowded punctures and shagreening dulling surface. Genal area in profile about one and one-half times as broad as eye, laterally with small punctures separated by half to one puncture width and fine shagreening dulling surface, ventrally with fine longitudinal rugulae converging towards mandibles and fine shagreening dulling surface. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals about one ocellar diameter. surface opaque, dulled by crowded punctures and shagreening except just mesad of compound eyes. Face above antennal fossae with fine, crowded. longitudinal rugulae and coarse interrugal punctures. Facial fovea extends down to Just below level of lower margins antennal fossae, separated from lateral ocellus by one ocellar diameter or slightly less.

Pronotum with space between dorsoventral ridge and posterior pronotal lobe smooth, concave, shiny with minute punctures and short fine rugulae below and in upper part. Mesoscutum with small round punctures everywhere separated by half a puncture width or less, ridges between punctures shagreened. Scutellum similar but punctures slightly larger. Metanotum similar but punctures smaller and more crowded. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure usually with three to five coarse longitudinal rugae and several irregular anastomizing rugulae, surface tessellate; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces moderately coarsely to finely punctatorugose; median sulcus of posterior surface with median width about one-third length; lateral surfaces with abundant minute punctures, reticularly shagreened. Mesepisternum punctatorugose except posteriorly where punctures distinct. surface dull, finely shagreened.

Metasomal tergum 1 with minute to small, irregularly sized, widely scattered punctures both apically and basally, punctures separated largely by four or more puncture widths; surface shiny, unshagreened. Tergum 2 with basal area punctures separated by two to three puncture widths, apical area as in tergum 1; surfaces shiny. Terga 3 and 4 with basal area punctures smaller, separated by three to four puncture widths: apical area is in tergum I; surfaces shiny. Pygidial plate broad, V-shaped with rounded apex, with raised internal triangular area. Sterna 2-5 with apical areas impunctate, moderately broad, sternum 2 with apical area medially equal to almost half of basal area; basally with crowded punctures; surfaces dulled by coarse reticular shagreening.

VESTITURE. — Entirely black to dark brown. Thorax with dorsal .surface hairs extremely short, plumose (but not scale-like), erect, giving .surface a velvety appearance (a few long hairs present). Terga completely lack apical pubescent fasciae; sterna without subapical fimbriae. Propodeal corbicula with dorsal fringe of plumose hairs relatively .short, not curling down over corbicula, anterior margin without plumose hairs, internal hairs simple; trochanteral flocculus weak. basal hairs short; tibial scopal hairs long, simple.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20: length. 8-10 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.68 ± 0.192 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.96 ± 0.008; FS1/FS2, M = 1.52 ± 0.023.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or more rufescent; flagellar segments 2-11 brown below: wing membranes moderately infumate, yellowish-brown, veins reddish-brown; tergal apices often slightly rufescent (allotype) and occasionally rufescent reflections basally: sterna 2-5 rufescent apically; distitarsi and tibial spurs rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae short, in repose barely reaching scutellum; scape length equals first two and one-third flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 long, equals about one and one-half times segment 2 and distinctly longer than 3, segment 2 quadrate or slightly longer than broad, segments 3-11 distinctly longer than broad. Eyes each about 3 times as long as broad or slightly shorter, inner margins converging extremely slightly towards mandibles. Malar space as in female. Mandible decussate, tip almost reaching to level of opposing posterior mandibular articulation when in repose, with inner tooth. Galea as in female. Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about 0.9: 1.0: 0.9: 0.9: 0.9: 0.9. Labial palpus as in female. Labral process as in female but slightly larger and reflexed; labrum as in female. Clypeus as in female but punctures slightly sparser and median impunctate line absent. Supraclypeal area as in female. Genal area as in female, moderately angulate posteriorly, lateral surface sculptured as in female but with extremely weak longitudinal rugulae present posteriorly. ventral surface with distinct longitudinal rugulae, sparse punctures and fine shagreening. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals more than one ocellar diameter. Vertex and face above antennal fossae sculptured as in female.

Pronotum as in female but rugulae absent. Mesoscutum. scutellum and metanotum as in female. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure with coarse. irregularly anastomizing rugulae; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces finely punctatorugose; posterior surface with median sulcus as in female; lateral surface tessellate and punctate, duller than in female. Mesepisternum as in female.

Terga 1-3 with basal area punctures small, separated mostly by two to three puncture widths, apical area punctures similar to basal on tergum 1, slightly smaller and sparser on 2 and 3. surfaces shiny, unshagreened. Terga 4-6 with basal area punctures progressively denser, surfaces progressively more densely shagreened. Sterna 2-5 with apical areas long, as long as half basal area on tergum 2. impunctate; basal areas densely punctate except at extreme bases; surfaces dulled by coarse reticular shagreening. Sternum 6 relatively flat. punctate and shagreened, shallowly emarginate.

Terminalia as in figures 59-61; note the following: sternum 7 with apical emargination greatly reduced or absent; sternum 8 with apical part extremely narrow: gonocoxite with dorsal lobe blunt; penis valve narrow, short: volsella with hairs and inner teeth.

VESTITURE. — White except inner surfaces basitarsi yellow and inner surfaces hind tibiae often brown: without apical fasciae on terga; sterna without subapical or apical fimbriae.
