Andrena prolixa is an interesting western species of moderate size and the coloration of A. vicinoides or A. saccata; Both sexes of prolixa can be readily recognized by the elongate glossa and galeae which are about as long as the median length of the clypeus; Both sexes have a relatively broad head with the inner margins of the compound eyes converging slightly towards the vertex; The female does not have a recognizable basal inferior tooth on the mandible, whereas the male has such a tooth but it occupies an unusually long segment of the mandible.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 10-13 mm; width, 3-4 mm; wing length, M = 4.41 ± 0.158 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93 ± 0.006; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.65 ± 0.031.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third or slightly more rufescent; flagellar segments 3-10 below dark reddish-brown to dark brown; tegula dark brown; wing membranes slightly infumate, veins dark reddish-brown to black; terga with apical areas often slightly rufescent; sterna 2-5 with apical areas translucent yellow to brown; distitarsi dark rufescent; tibial spurs dark brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first three flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 as long as segments 2 plus 3 or slightly longer; segment 2 about as long as 3 and about as long as broad; Eyes each slightly more than three and one-half times as long as broad, inner margins converging slightly towards vertex; Mandible moderately long, when closed about one-fourth its length extends beyond midlabrum, bidentate, base without inferior angle or tooth or angle extremely weak; Malar space long, minimum length equals about one-third width of mandibular base; Galea pointed, long, outer margin in apical half straight (not concave as in most species), about as long as median clypeal length; surface shiny, weakly shagreened near apex if at all; Glossa elongate as galea; Maxillary palpus as in frigida but segmental ratio about as 0.8:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.6:0.6; Labial palpus as in frigida but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.6; Labral process flat, broad, entire, trapezoidal in outline; labrum below process with median crista, convex, punctate at base near process; Clypeus protuberant, narrowed apically, with coarse punctures separated by one-half to one and one-half or more puncture widths, sparse apicomedially, without impunctate midline; surface shagreened in basal half (holotype) or less; Supraclypeal area minutely punctate and tessellate, dull; Face above antennal fossae with coarse rugulae diverging strongly towards ocelli; Facial fovea shallow, broad, as in frigida; Vertex above lateral ocellus equals slightly less than one ocellar diameter, dull, tessellate; Genal area in profile broader than eye (about as 4:3), surface shiny, lightly shagreened posteriorly, with minute sparse punctures.

Pronotum with humeral angle weak, dorsoventral ridge blunt, surface posterior to ridge shiny to moderately shiny, surface elsewhere dulled by reticular shagreening; Mesoscutum dulled by fine tessellation, impunctate; Scutellum dulled by fine tessellation to moderately shiny, punctures sparse except in posterior fourth or less; Metanotum dulled by fine tessellation and obscure punctures; Propodeum with dorsal enclosure tessellate, without roughening basally; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces with obscure punctures, densely tessellate; lateral surface dull, tessellate; Metepisternum dull, tessellate, punctures minute, obscure; Metasomal tergum 1 with basal area punctures small, separated by one to two puncture widths, surface dulled by reticular shagreening, apical area similar but shinier; Terga 2-5 similar to 1 but shinier, shagreening less distinct and punctures slightly more obvious; Pygidial plate V-shaped with rounded apex and strongly raised internal triangular area; Sterna 2-5 with punctures in apical halves and laterally, becoming sparse mediobasally, surfaces dulled by reticular shagreening.

VESTITURE. — Head dark brown to black except on posterior surface of vertex; Thorax pale dorsally (pale ochraceous to reddish-yellow), dark brown to black ventrally and laterally; propodeum often with some pale hairs dorsally; Metasoma and legs entirely brown to black; Pollen-collecting hairs as in monogonoparia.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-11 mm; width, 1.5-2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.61 ± 0.172 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.92 ± 0.006; FS1/FS2, M = 1.05 ± 0.009.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female but only tip of mandible (less than one-fifth) rufescent and sterna 2-5 with apical areas hyaline, yellow.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length as long as first two flagellar segments or slightly less; flagellar segment 2 about as long as 3 and distinctly longer than broad; Mandibles long, decussate, when closed outer mandible extending beyond midlabrum by half its length or slightly less; base of mandible with well-formed angle or tooth, apex of angle separated from base of mandible by a greater distance than apex separated from mandible; Malar space elongate, half as long as basal mandibular width; Galea and glossa elongate as in female; Maxillary palpus as in female; Labial palpus as in female but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5; Labral process flat, rectangular or weakly bidentate, often with a few punctures near apical margin; labrum apical to process shiny, without crista; Clypeus narrowed apically, with moderate-sized punctures separated mostly by half to one puncture width, small subapical impunctate area present, impunctate midline absent or weak, surface shiny, shagreened near base; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and vertex as in female; Genal area in profile twice as broad as eye or broader, surface shiny, lightly shagreened posteriorly with sparse minute punctures.

Pronotum as in female but ridge sharp and shinier posterior to ridge; Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 as in female terga 1-4 but surfaces shinier, terga 2-5 especially shiny with weak shagreening near bases; Pseudopygidial area present, narrow; Sterna 2-5 with apical areas impunctate, basal areas sparsely punctate, surfaces moderately dulled by reticular shagreening; Sternum 6 with apical margin flat, not reflexed.

Terminalia as in figures 132-136.

VESTITURE. — Head pale ochraceous except long dark brown hairs along inner orbits and on vertex; Thorax pale ochraceous to dark ochraceous; Terga 1 and 2 with long pale hairs, 3-5 with sparse brown hairs, 6 and 7 with pale hairs; Sternal hairs pale; sterna 2-5 with distinct subapical pale fimbriae of highly plumose hairs (more plumose than frimbrial hairs of schuhi, lanhami or milwaukeensis); Leg hairs pale ochraceous but inner surfaces tarsi pale yellow.
