This small black species from the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains can be separated from other black Scaphandrena by the relatively long scopal hairs, the distinctly punctate terga and the broad facial foveae.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 9-10 mm; width, 3.0-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.72 ± 0.122 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.08 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.26 ± 0.051.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third or less rufescent; flagellar segments dark reddish-brown to brown below; wing membranes moderately infumate, brownish, veins dark brown; terga often with rufescent reflections, especially terga 1 and 2; sterna with rufescent reflections; legs and tibial spurs dark brown to black.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equal to first three flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 as long as following two and one-half segments or slightly less; segment 2 as long as 3 or slightly shorter, quadrate; segments 4-10 longer than broad. Eyes each about three and three-fourths times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. mandible short, in repose surpassing midlabrum by about one-fourth length, bidentate. Galea pointed, broad, outer-apical margin straight to slightly concave; surface dulled by fine tessellation. Maxillary palpus long, segmental ratio about as 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.9:0.9:0.8. Labial palpus with first segment curved, segmental ration about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.7. Labral process trapezoidal, slightly thickened along apical margin, with shallow apical emargination, basally dulled by fine cross-striations; labrum below process with weak median crista. clypeus elongate, with distinct round punctures separated irregularly by half to one puncture width or slightly more, usually with complete but narrow median impunctate line (occasionally almost obliterated); surface shiny, delicate shagreening only at extreme base. Supraclypeal area dulled by minute punctures and coarse shagreening. Face above antennal fossae with longitudinal rugae and distinct punctures especially just below ocelli. Facial fovea broad, shallow, extending below to level of lower margin’s antennal fossae or slightly below, above separated from lateral ocellus by three-fourths to one ocellar diameter. Vertex above lateral ocellus equals one ocellar diameter or almost, dulled by punctures and shagreening. Genal area in profile about as broad as eye, with small punctures crowded near eye, sparse posteriorly, surface shiny near eye and shagreened posteriorly.

Pronotum without humeral angle or dorsoventral ridge; surface dull, finely shagreened, minutely punctured. Mesoscutum with round punctures separated by half to one puncture width; surface moderately shiny to dull posteromedially, with fine reticular shagreening. Scutellum similar but usually reticularly shagreened throughout. Metanotum dull, densely punctate. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure finely tessellate, smooth except at extreme base; dorsal area outside of enclosure and posterior surface tessellate with obscure punctures not roughening surfaces; lateral surface moderately shiny, reticularly shagreened with scattered punctures. Mesepisternum dull, with crowded obscure punctures and fine tessellation. Anterior wing with second submarginal cell receiving vein m-cu well beyond middle of cell (near outer third), narrower along anterior margin than posteriorly; pterostigma about as broad as from inner margin prestigma to wing margin. Tibial spurs normal; tarsal claws clefted.

Metasomal tergum 1 with distinct deep punctures, basal area punctures separated mostly by two puncture widths, apical area by half a puncture width or slightly more, narrow apical rim impunctate; surface shiny. Tergum 2 with apical area shallow, medially equal to about one-third length of tergum or less; basal area punctures separated by half a puncture width or slightly more, apical area by half a puncture width or less, narrow apical rim impunctate; surface shiny. Terga 3 and 4 similar to 2. Pygidial plate V-shaped with narrowly blunted apex, with internal raised triangular area. Sterna 2-5 with apical rims impunctate, basally with small round punctures separated by one or more puncture widths, surfaces moderately dulled by reticular shagreening.

VESTITURE. — Entirely black to dark brown. Stipes with abundant stiff simple dark hairs. Dorsal thoracic hairs short, relatively sparse; tibial scopal hairs long, simple; trochanteral flocculus complete; propodeal corbiculum incomplete anteriorly, with abundant long simple internal hairs, with dorsal fringe short. Metasomal terga without apical pubescent fasciae.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — M = 3; length, 10 mm; width, 2.5 mm; wing length, 3.55-3.72 mm; FL/FW, 1.19-1.20; FS1/FS2, 2.00-2.23.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black with exceptions as in female but clypeus pale yellow and wing membranes less infumate.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae short, in repose not surpassing scutellum; scape length equals first two flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 twice as long as segment 2 or longer; segment 2 slightly shorter than 3, quadrate; segments 3-11 longer than broad. Eyes each rather broad, almost two and one-half times as long as broad, inner margins converging toward mandibles. Mandible, galea and maxillary palpus as in female. Labial palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.5:0.6:0.6. Labral process as in female but more distinctly emarginate apically, labrum below process without median crista, shiny. Clypeus with round punctures separated by one-half to almost two puncture widths, more crowded basally; surface shiny. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and vertex as in female. Genal area as in female but with more abundant punctures and longitudinal shagreening posteriorly.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female except as follows: propodeal dorsal enclosure finely roughened mediobasally, lateral surface coarsely tessellate; mesepisternum with punctures crowded. Wing venation, tibial spurs and claws as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 punctate as in female terga 1-4 but punctures sparse, separated mostly by two or three or more puncture widths on tergum 1 and mostly by two puncture widths on terga 2-5. Sterna 2-5 as in female but basal area punctures separated by one to two puncture widths or more and surfaces shiny, shagreened only at extreme bases and laterally. Sternum 6 flat, apical margin shallowly emarginate, surface punctate, shiny.

Terminalia (Figs. 1-5) similar to those of chapmanae; note the following: sternum 7 with narrow apical bidentate area; sternum 8 with long narrow neck; gonocoxite with dorsal lobe blunt, rounded; gonostylus angulate along inner margin.

VESTITURE. — Entirely black to dark brown. Clypeal beard sparse, not hiding surface; thoracic dorsum with hairs long, sparse; terga without apical pubescent fasciae; sterna 2-5 with subapical fimbriae of short brown pubescence.
