Andrena topazana is a bee of the western mountains closely related to A. birtwelli; Like birtwelli, topazana has short scopal hairs, relatively long tergal apical areas without trace of pale fasciae and a tessellate, virtually impunctate abdomen; Both sexes of topazana can be distinguished from those of birtwelli by the longer maxillary palpi and the sparsely punctate clypeus; The female of topazana has the clypeal hairs sparse and highly plumose and terga 2 and 3 with the apical areas slightly shorter than the basal areas medially; The male of topazana differs from that of birtwelli by the shorter first flagellar segment of the antennae.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-11 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.74 ± 0.106 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.02 ± 0.007; FOVL/ FOVW, M = 3.29 ± 0.043.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or less rufescent; flagellum brown to reddish-brown below; tegula piceous; wing membranes hyaline, slightly and evenly infumate, veins reddish-brown to brown; terga 2-4 with apical areas often slightly translucent, rufescent; sterna 2-5 with apical areas narrowly hyaline, colorless; distitarsi dark rufescent; tibial spurs testaceous.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first three and one-third flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 slightly shorter than segments 2 plus 3 (about as 4:5); segment 2 about as long as 3 and about as long as broad; median segments slightly longer than broad; Eyes each almost three and three-fourths times as long as broad, inner margins parallel; Mandible short, when closed barely exceeding midlabrum, basal inferior angle absent; Malar space as in birtwelli; Galea is in birtwelli but shinier, shagreening faint; Maxillary palpus exceeds galea but last two segments or slightly more; segmental ratio about as 0.7:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.6:0.5; Labial palpus small, first segment curved, ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.7; Labral process large, emarginate with reflexed teeth; labrum apical to process with a single, weak, median crista, on either side of crista surface flat, dulled by fine shagreening; Clypeus with median third to half or more sparsely punctate, punctures round, irregular in size, irregularly spaced; surface shiny, unshagreened except laterally; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and genal area as in birtwelli; Facial fovea large as in birtwelli but separated from lateral ocellus by half to three-fourths an ocellar diameter; Vertex short, above lateral ocellus equal to three-fourths to slightly less than one ocellar diameter.

Pronotum as in birtwelli; Mesoscutum and scutellum opaque, tessellate, without distinct punctures; Propodeum as in birtwelli but dorsolateral and posterior surfaces with punctures absent or extremely shallow and obscure; Mesepisternum tessellate, punctures absent or obscure; Middle basitarsus and hind tibia as in birtwelli; Metasomal tergum 1 uniformly opaque, sparsely tessellate; Tergum 2 with apical area slightly shorter than basal area medially (about as 11:15), opaque, densely tessellate, basal area with punctures small, obscure, scattered or absent; Terga 3 and 4 similar to 2; Pygidial plate and sterna as in birtwelli.

VESTITURE. — Generally ochraceous to dark ochraceous and color, form and distribution of hairs as in birtwelli except as follows: clypeal hairs sparse medially, all highly plumose; sterna 2-4 with long pale hairs at least laterally near apex; thoracic pleural hairs always pale.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length 7-9 mm; width, 1.5-2.0 mm; wing length, M = 3.08 ± 0.269 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.00 ± 0.007; FS1/FS2, M = 0.92 ± 0.024.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female but terga 2-5 with apical areas usually translucent, reddish-brown to colorless (especially apically) and wing membranes hyaline, not infumate.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae long, reaching propodeum in repose; scape length equals about first two flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 usually about as long as segment 2 or slightly shorter (rarely slightly longer); segment 2 almost as long as segment 3; median segments about one and one-third times as long as broad; Eyes each about three times as long as broad, inner margins parallel or converging slightly towards mandibles; Mandibles and malar space as in birtwelli; Galea pointed, shiny, unshagreened or faintly so; Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:1.0:1.0:0.8:0.9; Labial palpus as in female but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.6; Labral process and labrum as in birtwelli; Clypeus as in female but occasionally slightly more densely punctate medially and punctures smaller; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, genal area and vertex as in female.

Pronotum as in birtwelli but shiny surface behind dorsoventral ridge often with a few extremely weak rugulae; Thorax otherwise sculptured as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 as in female terga 1-4 but shinier, reticularly shagreened rather than coarsely tessellate, apical areas usually with shagreening weak or absent; terga 2-5 with apical areas equal in length to half length of basal areas; Tergum 7 with pygidial area absent or extremely narrow and shiny; Sterna 2-5 as in birtwelli; Sternum 6 flat with apical margin extremely shallowly and broadly emarginate and often slightly reflexed at least apicolaterally.

Terminalia as in figures 47-51.

VESTITURE. — As in birtwelli but sterna 2-5 with subapical pale fimbriae absent or extremely weak and incomplete laterally; tergal and sternal hairs pale in color or mostly so.
