Main identification features
  • eyes right side
  • body elongate
  • pelvic separate from a


Body elongate; mouth horizontal, strongly curved; front nostril a tube that does not reach eye; rear nostril a slit in lip; a fringe of small papillae around margin of head; no pectoral fins; margin of preopercle hidden under skin & scales; pelvics short based, not joined to anal fin; dorsal fin origin on snout, the 1st ray not elongate; scaled between eyes; lateral line straight along middle of both sides of body, with short branch forward onto nape of blind side.

An Indo-Pacific genus with nearly 20 species; one occurs in and is endemic to our region.
