ATHERINOPS
SILVERSIDES
Head pointed, compressed; tip of snout broadly rounded, extending a little beyond mouth; mouth small, not extendible; eye small (~1/2 snout length); anal origin under rear of first dorsal; gill rakers rounded, without serrations on inner surface; teeth with forked tips, in single row on jaws; 1st dorsal IV-VII spines, origin over anus or a little behind it; last ray of 2nd dorsal over last 3 rays of anal; pelvics inserted a little closer to anus than top corner of pectoral base; two rows of scales under eye.
A genus with one species restricted to the temperate and subtropical northeastern Pacific; 1 species enters the northern fringe of our region.
