  • mouth at front; top lip folded down
ATHERINOPSIS

SILVERSIDES

Head and body compressed; snout pointed; mouth small, terminal, not extendible; edge of top lip folded down; eye small(<1/2 snout length); 1st dorsal VII-IX spines, entire fin well before anal fin; last ray of 2nd dorsal over last 1-3 rays of anal fin; pelvics inserted a little nearer anal fin origin than top corner of pectoral base; gill rakers rounded, not serrated; teeth conical, in 2-3 rows on jaws; scales large, smooth.

This genus contains two temperate northeastern Pacific species, 1 of which enters the northern fringe of our region.
