Overview
Main identification features Body very elongate, compressed; oblique mouth at end of long tubular snout; one barbel on chin; 1st dorsal with VIII-XII isolated spines; second dorsal and anal opposite, similar in form, raised at front, near tail; tail rounded; pelvics under belly, well behind pectorals; scales rough.

Color variable, usually brown to grey-brown above, with diffuse pale stripes and bars on the sides; at times completely yellow.

Size: 80 cm.

Habitat: rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-120 m.

An Indo-Pacific species; the tip of Baja and the SW Gulf of California, Panama to Ecuador and all the oceanic islands.
