Overview
Main identification features
  • barbels: short, chin and under eye
  • tan + dense brown spots and black dots
  • pectoral base: black blotch
Dorsal rays VII + I, 10 (rarely 11); anal rays I, 9 (rarely 8 or 10); pectoral rays 17-20 (usually 19); pelvic disc present; scales absent; tongue divided at front; underside of head with 6-12 short (less than pupil diameter) barbels; 2 short barbels under eye; no median barbel at tip of snout.

Light tan or cream colored with numerous brown spots on side; a prominent black bar or blotch on base of pectoral fin; fins often with faint brown spotting.

Size: reaches 5.2 cm.

Inhabits rocky shores from the intertidal zone down.

Depth: intertidal to 32m.

Western and NE Gulf of California.
