Etymology: Bufoceratias: Latin, bufo or bufonis = toad + Greek, keras or keratos = horn, horned (referring to the hornlike lure projecting from the head) (Ref. 86949 ) ;   shaoi: Named in honor of Dr. Shao Kwang-Tsao, Research Fellow of the Institute of Zoology, Academic Sinica, Taiwan, Republic of China, in recognition of his many contributions to fishery science and ichthyology of Taiwan (Ref. 51070 ) .

Dorsal soft rays (total): 5-6; Anal soft rays : 4. Metamorphosed females differs from Bufoceratias wedli and Bufoceratias thele in having a considerably shorter illicium (25-40% standard length versus 83-225% standard length) and a much larger and more complex esca (Ref. 51070 ).
