There are many long, grass-like leaves at the base and sometimes a pair of very small leaves, less than an inch long, halfway up the stem. The purple or pale blue flowers are in a cluster (raceme) at the top of the long stem, each bloom about 2 to 3 cm wide. They bloom over several weeks, beginning with those at the bottom of the cluster, progressing upwards. The large and noticeable anthers are yellow, and the green ovary is clearly above the petals.
