Overview
Main identification features
  • snout long, pointed
  • 1st dorsal fin : curved tip, origin ~over pectoral insertion
  • fin: tips black
  • flank: dark stripe
Snout moderately long and pointed, length in front of mouth 6.3-9.0 % of total length; no ridge on back between dorsal fins; origin of first dorsal fin over or slightly posterior to pectoral fin axil; first dorsal fin moderately large and falcate, its height 8.2-13.8% of total length, tip pointed; origin of second dorsal about over or slightly in front of anal fin origin.

Grey brown dorsally, shading to white ventrally; a nearly horizontal band of grey on midside extending into white of upper abdomen; black tips on dorsal fins, lower lobe of caudal, pelvic fins, and pectoral fins.

Reported to reach 275 cm; size at birth 38-72 cm.

Habitat: Inshore to offshore pelagic, although not oceanic, in estuaries, shallow muddy bays, saline mangrove swamps.

Depth: 0-64 m.

Circumtropical distribution; throughout our region on the mainland and oceanic islands.
