Main identification features

Dorsal rays VIII + I,10 (rarely 11); anal rays III,6 (rarely 7); pectoral rays 14-16 (usually 15); total rakers (including rudiments) on first gill arch 20-25 (usually 21-24); lateral-line scales 49-57 (usually 51-54); scales around tail base 20-25 (usually 22-24); head concave above; 6-7.5 scales between lateral line and 2nd dorsal fin; second anal spine very stout, much longer than third, reaching to or beyond level of caudal base when depressed and clearly exceeding longest anal soft ray.

Overall silvery with black lateral line; base of pectoral fin blackish.

Size: to at least 37 cm.

Inhabits bays, estuaries, and lower reaches of freshwater streams.

Depth: 0-25 m.

The mouth of the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
