Main identification features
Deep body; dorsal rays 15-17; anal long base (20-27 rays), origin under center of dorsal fin; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch increasing with growth, about 25 at 5 cm standard length, about 60 at 12 cm; snout short and relatively pointed; upper jaw moderately long, reaching well beyond rear margin of eye, but not reaching rear margin of preopercle, its rear tip bluntly rounded; gill membranes widely joined across isthmus (throat region), almost completely covering it; pectoral long, reaching to pelvics.
Bluish on back, silvery white below; a silver midlateral stripe in smaller fish, disappearing at about 6-9cm length.
Size: reaches about 22 cm, common to 10-12 cm.
Habitat: forms large schools over muddy inshore areas.
Depth: 0-32 m.
Southern California to the Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Revillagigedos and the Galapagos.
