Dorsal rays XIII, 18-20; anal rays III, 15-17; pectoral rays 15-16; lateral-line scales 34-39; membranes between dorsal spines not deeply incised; dorsal spines increasing in length to fourth or fifth spine then decreasing in length; second anal spine much shorter than pelvic fin length.

Generally white or silvery white with prominent black bars at level of pectoral fin and just in front of caudal fin base, also a black band through eye to nape; dorsal, anal, and caudal fin with black bands.

Size: attains 26.4 cm.

Habitat: a common species on rocky reefs

In 3-55 m depths, most common in 5-12 m.

Baja and the central Gulf of California to central Peru, including Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 18-20; Anal spines : 3; Anal soft rays : 15 - 17. Body deep, compressed, and disk-shaped; profile of head very steep and slightly concave; snout pronounced; teeth very small, setiform, and set in a comb-like band; base of pelvic spine with an axillary process; lateral line ending under last rays of dorsal fin; body creamy yellow with 5 or 6 dark vertical bars on the head, body and tail (Ref. 55763 ).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Usually observed in pairs or small groups in rocky areas near the shore (Ref. 4858 ). Feed on algae and benthic invertebrates (Ref. 28023 ). Form schools with Chaetodipterus zonatus (Ref. 9286 ). Oviparous (Ref. 205 ). Form pairs during breeding (Ref. 205 ). Minimum depth reported from Ref. 5227.
