Head relatively short, <22% of standard length; body relatively deep, <16% of standard length; no branch of lateral line to origin of pectoral; top jaw not protrusible; jaws ~equal length, or lower a little longer; jaw teeth relatively large, with 1 point, sometimes with smaller points on sides; teeth on sides of roof of mouth; insertion of pelvics nearer operculum than base of tail, fin reaching past anal origin; pectoral reaching past anal base; all pectoral rays branched, except 1st ray; juveniles with 2 fused barbels under chin, 29-34 scales before dorsal fin; 13-14 dorsal rays; anal 10-11 rays, origin under dorsal rays 6-8; juvenile barbels extremely long.
Purplish brown to red above, silver below; dorsal fin grey, with a large dark spot; pectorals uniform dark brown, with narrow clear margin; anal clear; pelvics grey; juveniles darker, black pectorals, chin barbel with black fringe.
Size: 38 cm.
Habitat: pelagic, around offshore islands.
Depth: surface, 0-5 m.
Indo-Pacific; the oceanic islands in our region.
