Eyes on left side; body height ~50% of standard length; head small, length ~22-28% of standard length, snout short, protruding; mouth ~39% of head length, ends under rear part of lower eye; eyes close together, ~parallel, ridge over lower eye; teeth ~equally developed on both sides of jaws, in 1 series on each jaw, no canines; gill rakers long, slender, 15-17 on lower arm of 1st arch; base of eye-side pelvic on midline of body; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; eye-side lateral line ~straight, from edge of opercle to tail base; dorsal 79-90 rays; anal 59-69 rays; eye-side pectoral ~65% head length; eye-side pelvic with 5 rays; tail with blunt point; scales rough, larger than eye, 39-45 lateral line scales.

Eye-side dusky grey to light brown, with scattered dark blotches; dorsal and anal with regularly spaced eye-sized blotches of dark color on membranes interspaced with clear areas, often a large basal blotch and smaller outer one, or alternating small and large blotches; dark irregular bars on membranes of tail, pelvic as body, pectoral speckled; blind side yellowish.

Size: 16 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 10-45 m.

SE Gulf of California to Colombia.
