Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993)
Character: Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length about equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with IX spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 28 to 30 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 19 to 21 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 15 to 16 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Overall whitish with two close-set yellow-orange to dark brown bars at level of pelvic fins; a third broader dark brown bar posteriorly on juvenilies which becomes orange yellow in adults; juvenilies, subadults and adults with an ocellus on dorsal fin; a dark brown bar though eye and another across base of caudal fin; pelvic fins dark brown to black.  
Habitat: Coastal to outer reef drop-offs with rich invertebrate growth to 60 m depth; may also occur in areas with sparse coral growth. Feeds on sponges. 
Distribution: Widely distributed in Indo-West Pacific from the coast of Queensland, the Frankland Group off north Queensland, Western Australia, and New Guinea; Indonesia and the Philippines, and very seldom along the Chinese coast. It is found in northern Taiwanese wa 
Utility: Marine aquarium fish.
