Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines : 3; Anal soft rays : 11. Greenish with pink markings on dark substrate. Very pale when on white sand substrates and dorsal spots is lost in large males (Ref. 48636 ).

Adults inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs to over 15 m (Ref. 9710 ) and nearby sand-rubble bottoms at 2-30 m, solitarily or in small groups (Ref. 90102 ). Food consist of small crabs and gastropods.
