Overview
Main identification features
  • head - ~5 orange stripes
  • body - ~6 rows orange or brown spots
  • tail fin base - black spot
Dorsal rays VI + I, 8-9; anal rays I, 8-9; pectoral rays 19-21 (usually 20); pelvic disc present; midlateral scales 25-26; scales large, rough, an all of body, head scaleless; nape with low crest; cheek with a row of papillae.

Semi-transparent whitish with about 5 horizontal rows of reddish-orange to brown spots on side; a dark brown spot just below base of middle caudal rays; a pair of red-orange to brown spots on base of pectoral fin.

Maximum size, 8 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble fringe of rocky reefs or coral patches.

Depth: 2-40 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Colombia, the Revillagigedos, Malpelo, the Galapagos and Cocos.
