Overview
Main identification features
  • mouth to end eye
  • eye-side: scales rough
  • dorsal and anal finslarge dark blotches
  • top jaw - large canines
Dorsal rays 90-99; anal rays 70-78; lateral-line scales about 75; body depth 2.2-2.3 in standard length; lateral line straight, without arch above pectoral fin; mouth ends under end of or just behind rear edge of eye; teeth in a single row, top jaw with large canines; gill rakers very short and thick (not longer than broad); scales rough on eyed side, smooth on blind side.

Brown with more or less ocellated pale spots on head and body; dorsal and anal fins with several large dark blotches.

Size: grows to 29.5 cm.

Inhabits soft mud or sand bottoms.

Depth: 0-114 m.

Southern Baja and the northern and eastern Gulf of California to Peru.
