Main identification features
  • front nostrils orange
  • brown + rows yellow spots
  • teeth blunt
Dorsal and anal fins moderately developed, clearly evident skin-covered ridges; origin of dorsal fin in front of level of gill openings; teeth blunt, no canines, becoming molar-like in adults.

Dark brown to nearly blackish with scattered white to yellowish spots; front nostrils orange.

Maximum size, 75 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Central Gulf of California to northern Peru, and all the oceanic islands.
