Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993) A review of muraenid eels (Family Muraenidae) from Taiwan with descriptions of twelve new records. Zoological studies 33(1):44-64(Chen, Shao & Chen, 1994)
Character: HL 6.5-7.5, DGO 12-17.8, TR 2.8-3.0 in TL; Vert 121-124. Yellowish anterior nostrils. Rows and number of teeth increase with age. Body coloration of young fish: whitish with 25-30 wide black rings. While maturing, body will be mottled with little black spots between rings until becoming uniformly brown. A dark patch at the corner of mouth. 
Habitat: Feed on crabs or other crustaceans. Small individuals inhabit in tidal pools. 
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian, north to the Ryukyus, south to the Great Barrier Reef. Taiwan: Kenting, Keelung, Chengkung, Hsiaoliuchiu.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 0; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 0; Vertebrae : 132 - 137. Body grey with fine pale barring (Ref. 48635 ). Young with 25-30 dark brown bars separated by white narrow interspaces; bars become obscure with age where in large adults, the pattern becomes mottled brown; corner of mouth dark brown. Head usually lighter, yellowish with variable dark blotching (Ref. 48635 ).
