Dorsal rays X+I or II,24-28; anal rays II,8-9; pored lateral-line scales 47-56; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 13-18, total 19-25; snout blunt, mouth terminal and oblique; 5 mental pores on chin, no barbel; teeth in 2-3 rows in upper jaw, the outer row enlarged and canine-like, a pair of large canines at tip of lower jaw; margin of preopercle with 5-7 spines at angle, the lowermost directed downwards or slightly forward; pectoral fins long, reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; second anal spine strong, longer than base of anal fin; tail straight.

Color silver, bluish grey on upper back; dark oblique stripes often present on sides (following scale rows); tip of spinous dorsal fin dusky, pectoral and anal fins clear to yellowish; young with pair of black stripes on upper side and black spot at base of caudal fin.

Size: to 25 cm.

Inhabits shallow coastal waters, often off sandy beaches or in sheltered bays, but seldom in estuaries; the young form large aggregations on or near rocky reefs.

Depth: 2-50 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
