Main identification features
  • head flat, eyes on top
  • head and body - white spots
  • cirri - top lip
  • rear opercle - dark bar
Head flattened on top, with eyes on top; fringe of small cirri above rear portion of upper lip; 5 pores with skin flaps on occipital region, no preopercle pores; rear nostril longer than front nostril; dorsal rays VII + I, 9-11; anal rays I, 10; pectoral rays 18-19; pelvic fins separate except for low ridge connecting bases of inner rays; no scales (fish >3cm) or 2 or 4 embedded rough scales at tail fin base.

Brown to nearly white; head with small white spots; body with larger white spots and sometimes blotches or wavy vertical lines; males with midlateral row of double brown spots and oblique dark stripes on dorsal fins; a short dark bar on lower part of edge of gill cover.

Size: to 7 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble adjacent to rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Galapagos Islands.

Abundance: Common.
Cites: Not listed.
Climate Zone: Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo).

Diet: mobile benthic gastropods/bivalves; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); mobile benthic worms.

Egg Type: Benthic; Pelagic larva.
