Dorsal rays III + XII + 9, segmented rays branched except first 1-2 and last ray; anal rays II, 18; pectoral rays 16; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line more or less horizontal; lateral line with 15 tubed scales followed two rows lower by 18 or 19 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 33-34; a short, broad cirrus above eye; bone bearing nostrils is smooth; scales rough, except smooth on side of belly; head scaleless except small patch of scales on upper opercle; scales absent on middle of belly and on base of pectoral fins.
Whitish or tan; female with 4 slightly diagonal brown bars on side and black band around base of tail fin; scale margins dusky imparting network pattern; male with reddish head, 4 black bars on body and tail black with two white bars.
Size: grows to about 6.9 cm.
Habitat: occurs along rocky shores.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Central Baja to the western and central eastern Gulf of California.
