Dorsal rays XIII (rarely XII or XIV), 14-16 (usually 14-15); anal rays II, 15-17 (usually 16); pectoral rays 14; total gill rakers on first arch 14-20 (usually 15-18); cirri present on posterior margin of anterior nostril; eye cirri with 1-10 tips, number increasing with growth; nape with a single cirrus on each side; snout rounded, overhanging; each jaw with more than 100 freely movable teeth; teeth present on front roof of mouth; dorsal fin deeply notched between spinous and soft portions; lateral line is a short arch above pectoral.

Olive on back, white on lower sides; longitudinal row of square to rectangular black blotches along middle of side; small dark spots anterodorsally on body and sides with white flecks; thin brown bars on snout, lips, and cheeks.

Size: reaches 8 cm.

Inhabits intertidal rocky reefs, including tide pools.

Depth: 0-2 m.

Central Gulf of California to Colombia, also all the offshore islands.
